Courageous Advocacy & charities

At St Michael’s, we define courageous advocacy as empowering children to stand up for what is right, reflect Christian values, and make a positive difference in the world. Our aim is to equip pupils with a strong moral compass, knowledge, and skills to become change-makers.

How We Put This into Practice at St Michael's

Pupil Leadership:

The School Council, Faith Group, Year 6 responsibilities and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors represent the pupil voice, lead initiatives, and contribute to school improvement while advocating for their peers.

Community Action:

Children donate to Bexley Foodbank through our Harvest Service and participate in national campaigns such as Jeans for Genes Day, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, and Children in Need. We enjoy supporting many charities, usually by holding non-uniform days to raise money.

Curriculum Connections:

Through PSHE and carefully chosen English texts, children explore issues of racial equality (Year 5: Hidden Figures), identity (Year 1: Julian is a Mermaid), and gender equality (Year 6: Suffragettes: The Battle for Equality). This ensures that children see themselves reflected in learning and develop awareness of justice and fairness.

Partnerships:

We work with local PCSOs and organisations like Show Racism the Red Card to address community issues and support children in becoming responsible, moral citizens.

Through these experiences, children learn to act courageously, advocate for change, and live out our SHINE values of Strive, Hope, Include, Nurture and Encourage.

The Diocese Link to Manicaland

As a school, we are within The Diocese of Southwark, which has links to Zimbabwe.

The Episcopal Area of Woolwich, of which we are a part, is twinned with Manicaland in Zimbabwe. St Michael's Church helps fund a school within the region and we have held collections within our school to support this.
